Usually, the first car off a production line is snapped up by the manufacturer's museum, but not the new Jaguar. The first new Jaguar XJ luxury saloon will be given away as a prize before it goes on sale and the owner will pay only £125.

The top-spec, short-wheelbase 3.0-litre diesel Portfolio model, worth £62,000, is the prize in a competition to raise money for children's charity the NSPCC. Anyone can pay £125 for a chance to win the car, right up to the cut-off date of 25 November. The draw takes place the next day. Entrants must be over 18, able to afford to insure the XJ themselves and available on 1 December for publicity in London.

All funds go to the Child's Voice appeal, which aims to raise £50million to develop the Childline counselling service. See www.jaguar.co.uk/nspcc to be in with a chance of winning.

The Audi A3 1.6 TDI S tronic with start-stop qualifies for 100% first year writing down allowances.

Start-stop helps preserve fuel and reduce CO2 emissions in urban driving conditions when the car is at a standstill, but the technology has almost exclusively been used for manual cars. Now Audi, in a pioneering move, has introduced a twin-clutch S tronic auto transmission with stop-start. S tronic can deliver lightning fast automatic or manual shifts via the gear lever or steering wheel-mounted paddle controls.

In its newly developed form for automatic applications, the start-stop system cuts engine power when the car comes to a standstill at traffic lights or in queueing traffic - the engine then remains dormant as long as the brake pedal is depressed and then restarts in just two-tenths of a second only when it is released in readiness for take-off. With the system's help, economy is boosted and CO2 is reduced by approximately 5g/km, but if required it can be deactivated at the touch of a button. The start-stop system is also supplemented in these models by recuperation technology, which provides further fuel and CO2 savings by recycling a proportion of the wasted kinetic energy generated under normal braking and normally dissipated as heat, and storing this temporarily in the vehicle battery to reduce the engine load when the car subsequently accelerates again.

Start-stop will be available on the A3 1.4 TFSI S tronic petrol model and the A3 1.6 TDI S tronic in both A3 (3dr) and A3 Sportback (5dr) bodystyles. The 1.4 TFSI S tronic model is actually more fuel-efficient than the standard manual model, recording 53.3mpg to the manual's 49.6mpg.

Porsche is developing a luxurious, front-engined grand tourer - a spiritual successor to the 928 built between 1977 and 1995. Looking at the picture you can see why the curvy, Panamera-based coupe is set to stun the competition. This new Porsche 928 will rival the Ferrari 599 GTB, Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9. Essentially it's a two-door, short-wheelbase version of the Panamera, helping to spread the £1.1billion development costs of that model.

As you'd expect from Porsche, driver appeal is a top priority. The engine choice will mirror the Panamera, so expect a 4.8-litre V8, with or without a turbocharger, producing 400-500bhp. The naturally aspirated variant will come with four or rear-wheel drive, while the range-topping turbo model will be 4WD only.

Thirsty V8s aren't the only engines in the plan. The Cayenne SUV hybrid will be on sale next year, with a Panamera petrol-electric version following closely behind. As this new 928 shares the Panamera's platform, it's sure to get the hybrid treatment, too. An Audi S4-sourced 369bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6, coupled to a 38kW electric motor, will give the hybrid 928 fuel economy that breaks the 30mpg barrier. That will make it the most frugal petrol-powered Porsche ever, while still giving amazing performance.

Its front-engined layout gives other benefits. A rear-engined 911 has around 100 litres of luggage space, but a similarly sized GT with its engine in the front would offer a useful 320 litres - vital if the new 928 is to be taken seriously as a grand tourer. While the nose is virtually identical to the Panamera, the shortened wheelbase and 2 2 layout give the 928 far smoother lines at the back. One of the major criticisms levelled at the four-door Panamera was its bloated rear, but this model's neater proportions should attract a new wave of style-conscious customers.

With the compact Boxster and Cayman, the 911, the Cayenne SUV and four-door Panamera, Porsche would appear to have most bases covered. But it's currently notable for its absence in the front-engined GT segment. The new 928 will be a fifth model line, and slots in above the sportier 911 in the range. This means it will fit into Porsche's pricing line-up somewhere between the 911 and Panamera. The four-door ranges from £70,000-£95,000, while the 911 is £60,000 up to £128,000 for the GT2. So expect the 928 to be between £65,000 and £90,000 - enough to safely undercut its Ferrari and Aston rivals when it goes on sale in 2012.
