In the UK people love to personalise their vehicles by choosing "cherished" or "special" registration numbers for them. They choose registration numbers which contain their initials or their date of birth or funny words relating to their profession. Once on their car or other vehicle they transfer the plate over when they change their vehicles, and sometimes they store the number for future use eg by their children. What's the total cost? All registrations bought from broombroom include the £80 assignment fee. This means there is nothing else to pay except for the costs of having the actual physical plates made up. NO HIDDEN CHARGES! The numberplates owned by broombroom are mainly held on V750 certificates like this. (A few are on a similar DVLA certificate, a green V778 Retention Document)
We will add you as a nominee. When you are ready to put the numberplate on a vehicle it's very easy, you just need to give this to your local DVLA office, along with some documents for the vehicle. The reverse of the V750 certificate {or V778} tells you what is needed - basically the V5 ownership registration document for the vehicle (shown on the right), the car tax number and the MOT certificate if applicable. Our local DVLA office is Portsmouth DVLA.

Where is my nearest local DVLA office?

You can apply by post or in person although during busy times you may have to wait or come back and collect your documentation later. It is best to call the local DVLA office first for advice if it is a long journey for you.

How do I get a physical numberplate for my car?
For security reasons there are a limited number of UK companies licensed to produce physical white and yellow numberplates.

What happens in the future if I want to change vehicle?

A registration number can be moved from one vehicle (car, van, lorry or motorbike).
Only the registered keeper of a vehicle is entitled to apply to transfer its cherished numberplate & registration number.

What are the requirements for participating vehicles?
Participating vehicles must be currently licensed (i.e. have car tax ), subject to annual testing (i.e. have an MOT) and available for inspection (i.e. be present in the UK). Applications will also be considered if:
i) the licence (car tax) for the donor vehicle expired no more than six months prior to the date of the application; or if
ii) the donor vehicle is not old enough to be tested (MOT'd) , i.e. less than 3 years old for cars, motorcycles, etc or less than 1 year old in the case of HGVs.
In both the above circumstances, all other requirements of the number transfer facility must be met in order for applications to be considered.
PLEASE NOTE: Recipient vehicles (i.e. the car the plate is going onto) must be currently licensed (i.e. have car tax) in order to participate in the number transfer arrangements. Your vehicle can be a motorcycle or moped instead of a car

Is there any type of vehicle that is not OK for a private plate?
Non-testable vehicles e.g. tractors, electrically propelled vehicles etc, cannot have your private numberplate.

What if one of the cars is in Northern Ireland?
No problem, provided that both vehicles meet the requirements of the transfer scheme. You should contact your local DVLA office for more information.

OK, so what do I have to do to put the numberplate on a different vehicle?
Any application to transfer a registration number must be made on a V317 - Application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number (Click on the link to download then you can print it). The V317 form is also available from a DVLA Local Office or from the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Swansea. The cost of transfer is £80. Currently you will need to take the completed V317 along with your MOT, car tax number, V75 registration document and the £80 to your local DVLA office.

What if I decide to sell my car/bike, but want to keep the numberplate?
You will need to complete a V317 - Application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number. The cost to retain a registration number is £105 for one year, £130 for 2 years or £155 for 3 years.
